(Archived) At last - a qualification for small business owners

Article Date :18 Feb 2005

News from Services SETA

A new qualification for owners of small businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs in the small business environment, has been introduced by the SERVICES SETA. The qualification embraces a highly successful set of training modules which were implemented by specialist providers selected by the Services SETA, in 2003. The training modules were centred round those areas of a small business that influence the management, financial control, growth and sustainability of a business. For example, workshops were run on modules such as Sales and Marketing, Financial Management, Labour Relations and Performance Management. These workshops gave the SMEs the opportunity to learn more about essential business skills and also to upskill their employees, based on their new knowledge. The success of these modules gave birth to the idea of combining them into a small business services qualification. In alignment with the National Skills development Strategy, this training programme has now been structured and presented as a national qualification. It is offered at three different levels (3, 4 and 5) on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). The small business person can therefore enter the training programme at a level appropriate to their existing knowledge, skill and experience. For example, new entrants can start at level 3, whereas more experienced business owners can round off their knowledge and skill at level 5 (roughly equating with a higher certificate or diploma) The method of delivery of the training towards the qualification has been specifically designed to accommodate small business owners or managers who find it difficult to be away from their business for any length of time. Modules may be completed in one or two days each and are repeated at regular intervals throughout the year, to allow flexibility within the programme. The delegates will be assessed for competence after each module as well as on completion of the whole qualification. Successful learners will then receive a Certificate of Competence in Small Business Services. An additional benefit that arises over and above the training material offered in this qualification, is the business advice and networking framework that is supplied by the training provider. Delegates will develop a support system of peers within their geographical area of operation. This allows for them to discuss mutual issues and problems on an ongoing basis. The training towards this qualification is offered at no charge to registered levy paying SME members of the Services SETA. This is surely an opportunity too good to be missed!
